Student Coach Credit Program

Program Overview

We are very excited be able to offer a program for Student Coaches to accumulate High School Level 10, 20 and 30 credit through Coaching within their local member organization.

The purpose of the program is to provide the framework and opportunity for student athletes to not only begin giving back to their communities, but also get them started on their own Coaching development pathway. The program is built around the student completing the Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education Programs and gaining valuable practical experience through Coaching within the local Soccer Community.

Students in grades 10 through 12, wishing to gain High School 30 Level Credit will be required to complete the following training through the Grassroots Coach Education Program in the following manner:

How the program works

Students can apply for the program by completing the application form. - Student Coach Credit Program Application *2023/24 Application Deadline (September 30th, 2023)

Once a Student has applied for the program, we will then connect with their member organizations Technical Director or Technical Lead to review the details required for the program and confirm their availability to support the student Coach.

It will then be up to the Student Coach and the approved mentor Coach to complete the necessary requirements outlined in the course description below.

Once all of the tasks for the specific level are complete, the Student will need to submit a final report outlining and confirming they have completed all of the tasks.

The final report will require sign off from the Technical Director or approved Mentor Coach confirming the Student Coach has met the necessary requirements.

The student will then receive an official letter from SSA, which they can take to their school principal confirming they have completed the course requirements and are approved for the extra credit.

Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education Program

Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Coach Education Program has four workshops based on Stages 1, 2, 3, and 7 of the Long-Term Player Development Model.

The first three workshops, Active Start, FUNdamentals and Learn to Train, deal with soccer training and the importance of physical literacy for players up to 12 years of age. The fourth workshop is called Soccer for Life and focuses on working with players age 13 and older through to “masters soccer”. The Soccer for Life stage includes a wide array of participants who play for fun and fitness, those who enjoy recreational soccer, as well as those who prefer to play competitively but not at a high-performance level.

Coaching Requirements

Level 1 - Active Start / FUNdamentals

Completion of online theory modules

- Active Start (1.5 hours)

- FUNdamentals (1.5 hours)

Attendance at practical on-field component

- Active Start (2 hours)

- FUNdamentals (3 hours)

NCCP Make Ethical Decisions

- Attend Make Ethical Decisions Workshop (3.5 hour)

- Complete Make Ethical Decisions Evaluation (1 hour)

NCCP Making Head Way

- Online Theory (1.5 hours)

Respect in Sport Training

- Complete Respect in Sport Training for activity or group leader (3 hours)

Practice Plan Development

- Completion of a season of session plans that are relative to the age group student is coaching

- Practice Participation (30 hours)

- Leading or co-leading practices throughout the season

Mentorship (10 hours)

- Student coach supervised by trained Learning Facilitator; Saskatchewan Soccer approved Technical Director

- Mentorship includes post practice and game conversations, feedback on practice plans and identifying areas of strength and growth.

Reflection

- Coaching Career Pathway/Reflection

- A written reflection on the process and the skills learned while learning to become a coach. Coupled with an explanation of how to achieve a career as a soccer coach in Canada.
